Red Deer is one of the largest species of deer and is scientifically known as Cervus elaphus. The deer is found in most parts of Europe, the Caucasus Mountains, Asia Minor, parts of Western Asia, Central Asia and northern India. It also inhabits the Atlas Mountains, it also inhabits the area between Morocco and Tunisia in northwestern Africa, being the only species of deer to inhabit Africa. It has also been introduced in Australia, New Zealand and Argentina. In many parts of the world, the deer is killed for its meat.
Red Deer are ruminants, with an even number of fingers and a four-chambered stomach. Recent DNA studies have clearly indicated that the Red Deer, East Asian and North American Elk are different species. Sika deer is suspected to be the ancestor of these species of deer that evolved in Central Asia. Their number is constantly faced with the declination in North Africa, but their numbers have increased dramatically in the UK. They are the largest species of deer after the fourth moose, elk, deer and sambar. They eat food in two steps and toes withstand an even number of fingers, such as camels, goats and cattle.
